Dundurn Castle
Dundurn Castle is a historic castle built in the early 1830’s and is also the site for a former fortified encampment by the British military. This historic site in Hamilton is a wonderful place to bring your family to learn the diverse history of the war, the people who lived during that time, and those who came afterward. Dundurn Castle houses 40 rooms and costs over a $175,000 to build back then, so you can imagine the architecture, time and effort that went into this magnificent property. Guided tours are offered throughout the year, and with so many seasonal events, you can be sure to find something that strikes your fancy. Visit in May for a tour of the kitchen gardens that cover a whole 2 acres of the property, as well as having a stroll through the military museum at a pace that is set by your party. If that’s not to your liking, visit during a garden sharing event to take home a taste of the Dundurn Castle kitchen gardens, or attend a class that imparts knowledge of the work that goes into maintaining the kitchen gardens in all their splendor.
Dundurn Castle opens at noon and closes at 4 pm every day of the week except Monday, so you can get your dose affluence and splendor easily. Admission for adults is affordably priced at $11.50, senior visitors and students 13-17 are $9.50, youth aged 6- 12 are $6, children 5 and under may visit Dundurn Castle free of cost with an accompanying adult. There is free parking at the Dundurn Castle. Private photographs are allowed, however, a permit is required for photo shoots or groups shots of 10 more people, and you must book your time in advance.
The cooking workshops always draw a large crowd, and it’s a great way for your family, or a school group to learn how to make meals by hand the old-fashioned way with fresh ingredients from the Dundurn Castle kitchen garden.
